Hi Friends,
I have just returned to the United States after more than 4 months abroad.
To say that it is an adjustment is a bit of an understatement. I wasn’t really ready to leave Scotland. I deeply fell in love with Edinburgh, the Highlands, the town of East Lothian, and all the residents. However, commitments called me back to the states and I’m here recovering from jet lag and having a wild winter storm dump 11 inches of snow in a few hours on Portland. Today the temperatures are in the 20’s and everything is iced over. Pretty, quiet, and dangerous if you have to drive.
This weeks ‘this and that’ will mostly focus on Scotland but a favorite from Portland makes an appearance (looking at you Maloof Wines).
These Hooligans - Hebridean Sheep
This crew is located at Carfrae Farms. I visited with them every day I was there. A bit skittish they are very cute and gentle. I loved them.
The Cottages (and Farm Store) at Carfrae Farms
I had the incredible pleasure of staying for 3 nights in the town of Carfrae, East Lothian. I stayed at the wonderful cottages at Carfrae Farms, which exceeded all of my high expectations at every turn. I highly recommend an extended visit if you are looking for a very comfortable, stylish stay with beautiful surroundings and lovely hosts. Carfrae Farms also has a newly opened farm shop that is incredible. Stocked with top brands of delicious food items, wines, whiskey, spirits, fresh meats, fresh baked goods from wonderful local bakers and so much more. Take epic walks, curl up with a good book, eat, drink, and be merry.
Sigh. Take me back.

I was immediately drawn to this shop, which was right around the corner from my flat and on a street with other epic shops including the Method and Golden Hare Books. Cat, the owner, is just a wonderful person with great style, keen fashion sense, and a firm commitment to sustainable items and helping the planet. Inot only shopped (these boots below were essential to my successful explorations during my time in Scotland) but was welcomed to come in and share conversation and be a part of their community. I love everything about this place and the people (and Cat’s adorable doggo, Nessie). Follow them on Instagram @shoptreen_
The 5-Course Tasting Menu, with wines, at Spry, Edinburgh

Obsessed with the wonderfulness that is Spry Edinburgh. The team is incredible. The food is inspired, delicious, and thoughtful. The wines are epic. I had my “last night out” in Edinburgh at Spry and was not disappointed. It is a must-visit, along with their coffee bar, Ante, conveniently located downstairs.
The Method - Modm
This beautiful yummy store that is just a few doors down from Treen in Edinburgh is a soothing oasis and offers wonderful skin care products along with a delightful owner. Located on St. Stephen Street in Stockbridge it is one of my favorite places.

ALSO on St. Stephens Street (I told you - best street!) in Stockbridge, this darling bookstore has a wonderful selection, really good gatherings and events, lovely staff and a cozy fireplace. What’s not to love?
Wine of the Week: ‘Where Your PJ’s At?’ Maloof Wines
Back in Portland, as the snow was piling up, I ran to the store for provisions and was delighted to discover one of my very favorite producers, Maloof Wines, on the shelf with one of my very favorite bottles - Where Ya PJ’s At? As described on their website as “Comic - Blended Cuvées Whimsical multi-site blends. Components vary from vintage to vintage while the spirit of each cuvée remains consistent.”
Love these wines very much.
That’s what I have this week. Mentally and spiritually I’m not really ready to be back in the US. I miss Scotland and can’t wait to go back. Do let me know if you are planning a trip there soon. Would love to chat about it!
Happiest weekend. Thanks for reading.
